Staghorn ferns (Platycerium spp.) are unique, epiphytic plants that thrive in indirect light and high humidity, often mounted on boards or grown in hanging baskets. Here’s a care guide to help them flourish:
### Light
- **Bright, indirect light** is ideal. They can tolerate some low light but will grow best in medium to bright, filtered light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn their fronds.
### Watering
- **Water thoroughly, then let dry** before watering again. The frequency will depend on your climate: about once a week in warm months and less in winter.
- **Soak the root ball** or growing medium for about 10-15 minutes. If mounted, you can immerse the entire mount in water.
- Staghorns absorb water through their fronds too, so a light misting between waterings can be helpful.
### Humidity
- Staghorn ferns love **high humidity** (50-60% or higher). This can be achieved by misting, placing near a humidifier, or grouping with other plants.
### Temperature
- Ideal temperatures range from **60-80°F (15-27°C)**. Keep them away from cold drafts, as they’re sensitive to temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
### Soil and Mounting
- **Epiphytic by nature**, they don’t need traditional soil. Instead, attach to a mount or grow in a well-draining medium like sphagnum moss or orchid bark.
- If mounting, use sphagnum moss as a cushion between the fern and the board or mount.
### Fertilizing
- During spring and summer, feed monthly with a **balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer**. For mounted ferns, you can apply fertilizer directly to the moss.
### Maintenance
- Prune off any dead fronds to encourage new growth, and check for dry brown patches, which may indicate under-watering.
- Staghorn ferns have two types of fronds: **shield fronds**, which are rounder and protect the root ball, and **fertile fronds**, which resemble antlers and grow outward. Avoid trimming shield fronds, as they’re essential for the plant’s health.
### Pest Management
- Staghorns are generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract scale or spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
With proper care, a staghorn fern can grow beautifully and even be passed down through generations as a living heirloom!
